Back After Vacation!
Jan. 4th, 2021 09:26 amOh man, I needed that vacation! I slept, and ate, and sewed, and it was great.
I tried to be Productive, and for the most part I did get a lot of stuff done. I finished a new petticoat for the new crinoline, and got 90% of the way through the red striped 1850s dress, but I lost steam about four days ago, and have just been sitting and staring at it ever since.
The main news is that the Victorian Dinner did not happen. Another local Costuber was going to host at her house, but her son's girlfriend and family all ended up coming down with Covid, and he had seen her just a few days prior, so we decided it was safest to postpone until everything was clear. We're now looking at sometime in the first half of February.
Which is fine, because that gives me way more time to get some sewing done. I hadn't even touched my sister's dress yet, as she was so busy during December that we didn't have a chance to meet and get her measurements. Now I actually have time to make her some proper support garments, so hooray!
But, the postponement of the dinner was the main reason I ran out of oomph to finish the red dress. The dress already took way longer than anticipated because there was so much unexpected hand-sewing involved, and there's still a lot needed to finish up. I've mainly just not wanted to get into my corset during holiday fatness, and I'd have to get laced in to be able to put on the bodice and place the bust pads. Meh. Other than that, I still need to trim the front opening (more hand-sewing) and install the hooks and eyes (ugh). I still need to get the chemisette and the undersleeves done, too, but they're mostly machine sewn rectangles.
Christmas was a low-key night at home. M brought home my favorite cake from Central Market (black forest cherry cake!), which was lovely, and Christmas Eve we raided the deli and cheese departments to make a fancy charcuterie board. We bought a mind-boggling amount of fancy sausages from the meat department to cook on Christmas day, since neither of us really wanted to *cook* and sausages would be easy enough.
In Very Important News, Carolina kitty, who has been roaming the apartment complex for well on a year now, has officially picked us as her people. We had a cold snap of below-freezing temps with a threat of snow, and we just couldn't let her be outside during it, so we kept her in our apartment for that week. She now barely leaves (she does go outside to run around for about an hour at night before wanting back in), and when she is outside she comes running as soon as she sees us and goes to the door. She stayed mostly on a dining room chair for the first few nights, but has become comfortable enough now that she camps out on the couch, even when the other kitties are there.
The other cats are slowly adjusting to the new family member. Tibby had sniffed her a few times while she's sleeping and decided that yeah, that's fine. Tookie mostly avoids her. Pepper has slept on my lap while Carolina was pressed up against my leg, but he was very cautious about crawling onto my lap while she was near. So far, no fights, mostly just squinty side-eye.
