Jan. 26th, 2023 08:30 amHave been reading what period magazines have to say about petticoats in the 1850s and the consensus seems to be that grosgrain petticoats are the best, with lots of flounces from the knee down. So, I ordered some grosgrain fabric yesterday. I'm very curious to see how this petticoat will make up. Grosgrain fabric turns out to be pretty hard to find at a decent price, but I eventually found an Etsy seller in Greece that had it. It will take about a month to get here, and now I fear I haven't ordered enough since it's so narrow (30".) I ordered 12 meters, but I usually use 9 yards for just a single flounce petticoat in 36" wide muslin, so I'm going to have to do some skirt math to make it work.
Also ordered some vintage passementarie buttons for the Kent State bumblebee dress. Vintage in this case meaning 1980s, because anything older than that is like $8 per button. Yeesh. I need to learn to make these things for myself.
I waffled over starting the crinoline last night. I bought all the supplies over a year ago to make this wire frame crinoline, but I'm really worried about the piano wire bending out of shape when I sit. The original blog post only mentions how the finished hoop behaves while dancing, but not how it's held up. I messaged her and see how it fared, so if I hear back before the weekend then I may dive into it.
Should have used my free night to iron all the clothes that M laundered the other night. He just puts everything back into the laundry bag to bring it back home, so now everything is super wrinkled and my bag of clean clothes is currently unwearable. ~sigh~ Guess I know what I'm doing tonight.
