m_of_disguiseI was happy to discover this weekend that I am down 5 pounds! Motivated by this, I finally started making use of that gym membership that I bought back in May. My legs are NOT HAPPY with me today, but good gods, I already feel so much better getting in some regular exercise. I was a little shocked at how out of shape I am (30 minutes on the elliptical should not have been as difficult as it was), but I feel good that I'm getting things headed in the right direction again.
I bought myself a couple of birthday presents. First, I bought a copy of Prior Attire's Victorian Dressmaking book. It is crammed full of tutorials and patterns. I like that she gives patterns for the undergarments for each era, too. Some of her instructions can be a bit lacking or muddled in places (for example: "make balayeuse in the usual way", but I couldn't find any instructions on what exactly she meant by that), and sometimes the layout is a little misaligned or overwhelming (there is a LOT of stuff going on in this book), but I love that the entire book is in color, all the step-by-step photos, and that there are several looks for each era, everything from day to evening to bridal.
I also pre-ordered the new Patterns of Fashion. I'm so excited about it! I love making undies, and this volume will be all stays and rumps and corsets and things. It won't get here until October, but I'm counting it as a birthday present.
I'm most excited about the artwork I bought, though. I've been a fan of Tommervik's work ever since his artwork first caught the attention of the media a few years ago (mostly his Star Wars stuff), but I never thought I'd actually get to own a piece of his artwork since I figured it would be way out of my price range. Thankfully, one of his Star Trek pieces became available for a total steal, so I snatched it up as quickly as I could.
I'm so excited about it! There's another Spock piece that he puts up for sale every once in a while, but that no one has ever grabbed, so I keep stalking his site to see if he'll change the price. If things go my way, maybe that can be my Christmas present to myself. XD
