Aug. 21st, 2023 08:49 amWeekend absolutely did not go as planned. M took the car out on Friday night, and on the way home the power in the car started to flicker. We figured it was a battery problem, as it was rather old, so Saturday he walked over to the auto parts store across the street and bought a new one - $250 for a battery for a Camry! Cobalt shortages, supply chain, blah blah blah, they're now twice the price they used to be.
So he put the new battery in and drove it around for a while, and just as he was heading back home, the power started to go out again. So, not the battery, but the alternator. By that time it was pretty late at night, so Sunday Chance picked him up and they found a new alternator (another $300 because blah blah blah shortages) and they installed it together.
Car is doing fine today, thankfully, so it was definitely the alternator and not some bigger unknown problem. But, nothing we had planned to do over the weekend got done, so we are now desperately low on groceries. I made a big dish of baked ziti with one of the last pounds of hamburger and most of the rest of the noodles we have, which should last us another day or two, the other pound will become hamburger helper, and I have just enough stuff in the house to make a pot of potato soup, and that will get us to the weekend when we can try and do the Costco run again.
But, I did manage to pull out some hand-sewing and do some stuff! I dug out one of the front panels for the 1899 suit, and I spent the majority of Saturday stitching trim on around the tabs. I meant to get a photo of it this morning, but I forgot. But! It looks really fantastic so far. I need to outline the little comma-shaped doodads near the hem, and to embroider the vines on next. That will be a nice after-work project. I also need to embroider the buttons, but that's something nice and portable that I can take into work with me, which is perfect because the next couple of weeks are going to be rather slow.
The Costumers Guild has had a sudden influx of very enthusiastic new people, which is great. They're all excited about planning events and getting together, and one of the events on the list is an outing to see La Boheme at the opera house next spring. I signed up as "going", even though the infant will only be 5 months old. It's close enough to home that travel time won't be an issue, and it's one day off, which shouldn't pose a logistical problem.
That gives me plenty of time to make a dress! I had planned a dark green version of the Oak Leaf dress, but with ivy leaves and little beaded spiders, many years ago for Costume College, that I bought all the materials for but never made, so I think I'm going to try and tackle that project. The one big obstacle is that the absolutely gorgeous and perfect black lace that I bought for it while in New York was sadly lost in the fire, so now I'm on the hunt for a suitable replacement.
