While I didn't manage to get the 1872 corset finished this weekend, I did make some good progress on it!

I had plans to meet with Liz at around 2pm on Saturday, so I spent the morning cutting out the new silk pieces for the corset. I'm basically starting over from scratch because I had forgotten to lengthen the waist when I cut it out the first time, so all I had were the gussets and the coutil layer for the new version. So I cut out the silk layer and the fusible webbing since I can't be bothered to roll-pin. I managed to bond the silk to the coutil on the back panels before I needed to stop and get ready to go.

Met with Liz at her place, where she gifted me with many things she didn't want to haul to the new house - two child-sized mannequins, a number of bonnets and hat blanks, a box of fabric, some fans, a few extant pieces, and an entire bin full of Corset Story corsets that no longer fit her.

The AC in her apartment was out, and we were sweaty messes by the time we'd loaded everything in the car, so we went to HTeaO, a new drive-through tea place. We went inside so she could show me what was what. You basically grab your cup size of choice and then fill it yourself with whatever tea or combo of teas you like. They had tasting cups, which was very helpful. I tried the Green Almond, which was lovely but I don't think I could have drank an entire soda-cup of it, and the Texas Chai, which is basically your standard Southern sweet tea with chai flavorings, and it was delicious. I got a cup of that, and drained that cup pretty quickly. We went during happy hour, so they were only $1.50.

After tea, we drove to our favorite antique store to see what new sorts of things they'd brought in. There was an entire rack full of new extant clothing. I went home with an 1890s wool child's dress, and Liz picked up a lovely 1890s bodice. I also took home a vintage netted lace curtain that will eventually become a partlet, and a vintage apron with inset lace that will stay as it is and be used with my 16thC stuff.

We also found a funky 1880s health corset that had a built in bustle. It was in terrible condition, as all the metal eyelets had bled rust everywhere, and there were patches of mildew. But it was such an unusual corset that I took a bunch of pics and posted them, and a friend managed to identify it as Madame Foy's Skirt Supporting Corset from 1885. I think I'm going to go back on Saturday and pick it up so I can pattern it, since it was only $10.

I dropped Liz at home after antiquing, and went on to drop off all my new stuff at the storage unit before heading home. I was scorched from being without AC all day (it was out in Liz's apartment, my car's AC is out, and the antique store's AC was out!) so I downed a bottle of water and hopped into the shower for a refresh. I made a pot of stew for dinner, and spent the rest of the evening resting on the couch.

Sunday the baby decided to be uncooperative and fight me every time I tried to get her to sleep. I lost most of the day to baby shenanigans, but finally managed to get her down for a nap around 4. I dove back into working on the 1872 corset, fusing the rest of the silk and coutil pieces together, transferring markings from the pattern onto one of the front pieces, and then remarking all those chalk lines with thread so they wouldn't vanish. I basted in the front hip gusset, basted the weird diagonal false seam this corset pattern has, and pinned in one of the bust gussets. I had hoped to at least close up the false seam so I could baste in the bust gussets, but I ran out of time. Still, progress!

I doubt I'll be able to work on the corset any after work this week, but I am hopeful for more progress this coming weekend. Next week is M's trip and my 5-day mini-vacation, so I'm really hoping to finish the entire corset over those days off.
