Despite M's protests at my opening packages without him, we did not end up opening or setting up any baby stuff this weekend. The box mountain in the living room continues to grow, and now takes up half of the entire room. I sat with M in the office and we brainstormed new room layouts, and we came up with a preliminary plan, so hopefully the baby things can get moved in this week.

But, since we didn't have to do a bunch of baby stuff, I had the entire weekend free to do garb stuff! I headed out early on Saturday, slightly later than planned but not terribly, and hit the warehouses. I surprised myself by having enough energy to browse through four of them before it all became too much. Most places were a bust, but Best Fabrics provided, as it usually does for Ren things. I bought a length of a fabulous gold/cream brocade for the loose gown (which turned out to be a Sartor fabric!), and a gold/black brocade for the kirtle forepart. I also bought a backup forepart fabric that I also love, but the gold ended up too different from that of the gown fabric. It will eventually become another forepart for something else, though, so nothing will go to waste. I stopped at the storage unit on the way home and dug out some gold taffeta to line the loose gown.

It took the rest of Saturday to get the front panel of the kirtle cut out, the forepart patterned and cut, and the front of the kirtle assembled. It takes me a long time to do anything because my hips just do not like crawling around on the floor to cut fabric right now. As of right now, I still need to cut out the back panel from the taffeta, cut out all the lining, and cut out the facing. Lots to still do.

Sunday started with a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up a few things for dinner, and a stop at Joann's to pick up some linen for the kirtle lining. (I had looked for linen in Dallas, but the only warehouse that had any wanted $25/yd and didn't even have it in black.) I came home, threw a roast in the crock pot, and got to work on the loose gown.

I agonized for a while over cutting the gown fabric because I though that I hadn't bought enough and that I'd have to cut one panel upside down to make it work, but after staring at the fabric for a good while I realized that the pattern was designed in such a way that there was no right or wrong way. Whew! That meant that I could cut everything out just fine and still have plenty left for the sleeves, and my minor crisis was averted.

I ended up not having enough of the gold taffeta to line the entire gown, but luckily I had brought home two bolts of slightly different colors, and I could use the not-quite-suitable one to line the back panels where it wouldn't be seen.

Liz stopped by Sunday afternoon for a brief visit and to drop off a pile of belated birthday gifts. Ya'll, she got me an actual piece of antique brocaded cloth of silver! It's gorgeous, and I will never touch it except to take it out and admire it.

Once she left, I made a pot of mashed potatoes to go with the roast, we ate dinner, and I finished assembling the body of the loose gown. It is now 80% complete, and just needs the sleeves! I'll probably also understitch the neck opening since the lining wants to roll out a little bit.

I meant to take a photo of the sleeve pattern in Tudor Tailor before I left for work today so I could pattern it out during my downtime at work, but it completely slipped my mind this morning. So instead of sleeves, tonight I will cut out the back panel for the kirtle and assemble the rest of the body. I would like to get the lining all cut out, as well, but I don't know if I'll have the time for that. I need to finish up everything by Thursday at the latest so I still have time to throw together a new shift on Friday, since I don't have a high-necked one suitable for Elizabethan stuff. It will be cotton from the stash, it will be slapped together, but at least I'll have it.
